The Road to Hana, Out in the Open Air

Most Road to Hana tours keep you inside a closed coach. This one does the opposite. You ride in Maui’s only open-air, safari-style Jeep, so the rainforest, the coastline, and the fresh island air are right there with you the entire day. It is a private tour for your group alone, which means no strangers, no rigid timetable, and the freedom to linger wherever you like.

Your guide knows this road by heart. Together you will roll through Paia Town, pull over for waterfalls and photo stops, wander beneath rainbow eucalyptus trees, and reach the famous black sand beach at Wai‘anapanapa. Want to swim a little longer, grab banana bread from a favorite stand, or skip a stop entirely? Just say the word. The day is built around what your group wants to see and do.

This is a small, family-run tour, and that personal touch is the whole point. You are not a seat number here, you are part of the ‘ohana for the day, seeing the Road to Hana the way it was meant to be experienced.

Tour Highlights

  • Paia Town and Ho‘okipa Lookout: a laid-back surf town and a famous lookout for big waves and windsurfers.
  • Twin Falls: an easy waterfall and photo stop early on the highway.
  • Bamboo Forest and Rainbow Eucalyptus: walk among towering bamboo and the famously colorful eucalyptus trees.
  • Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread: a legendary roadside stop for warm, fresh banana bread.
  • Pua‘a Ka‘a State Park: an optional swim in a calm waterfall pool when conditions allow.
  • Wai‘anapanapa State Park: a striking black sand beach with lava caves, sea arches, and an optional swim.
  • Hana Town and Koki Beach: old Hawaii charm in Hana, plus the dramatic red sand shoreline at Koki.
  • Coconut Glen’s and the turtle stop: dairy-free coconut ice cream, then green sea turtles at Ho‘okipa on the way back.

Because this is a private, customizable tour, your exact stops can flex with the weather, the season, and what your group is most excited to see.
