Nature’s Own Paintbrush
Somewhere along the Road to Hana, you may round a bend and spot trees that look almost too colorful to be real, their trunks streaked with green, blue, purple, orange, and red. These are rainbow eucalyptus trees, one of the most surprising sights on the drive. Here is what they are and why they look the way they do.
Why the Bark Is So Colorful
The rainbow eucalyptus, also called the Mindanao gum, sheds its bark in strips throughout the year. When the outer bark peels away, it reveals bright green inner bark underneath. As that fresh bark is exposed to the air, it slowly changes color, shifting to blue, purple, orange, and finally a reddish brown before it peels again. Because different patches of the trunk are at different stages, the tree shows every color at once, like a living work of art.

Rainbow Eucalyptus Quick Facts
- The colors come from freshly exposed inner bark changing as it ages.
- It is the only eucalyptus native to the rainforest, from the Philippines and nearby islands.
- In its native range it can soar up to 250 feet tall.
- It is widely planted along Hawaii’s roadsides for its beauty and fast growth.
Where to See Them on the Drive
Groves of rainbow eucalyptus grow in a few spots along the Hana Highway, and some of the easiest to admire are within the Garden of Eden Arboretum near mile marker 10, where you can walk right up to them on maintained paths. You will also see them here and there along the roadside, so keep an eye out as you drive the lush early stretch of the route.
Stop Safely and Tread Lightly
As tempting as it is to pull over for a photo the moment you see them, only stop where it is safe and legal, using established pullouts or a garden with real parking. The Hana Highway is narrow and winding, and much of the land is private or sensitive. Admire the trees, take your photos, and never carve into or peel the bark, so these living rainbows stay beautiful for everyone.
