The First Great Stop

Just past the surf town of Paia, before the famous curves really begin, Ho’okipa Beach Park makes a perfect first stop on the Road to Hana. From its bluff-top overlook you can watch world-class surfers and windsurfers ride the waves, and later in the day, green sea turtles haul out to rest on the sand. It is a beautiful, quick stop that eases you into the adventure.

A Windsurfing Capital

Ho’okipa is famous around the world as one of the premier windsurfing and surfing spots on the planet. Steady trade winds and powerful north-shore swells draw expert riders, and on a breezy afternoon the water fills with colorful sails. There is a paved overlook and parking area where you can pull over, take in the action, and snap photos without even getting sandy.

What to Know

  • Located just past Paia, near the start of the Road to Hana.
  • A bluff-top overlook offers easy parking and big views.
  • Best for expert surfers and windsurfers; conditions are powerful.
  • Green sea turtles often rest on the beach in the late afternoon.
  • Keep at least 10 feet from turtles and never touch them.

The Turtles of Ho’okipa

In the late afternoon, Ho’okipa is one of the most reliable places on Maui to see honu, Hawaiian green sea turtles, come ashore to bask on the sand. Volunteers often rope off a respectful area around them. These turtles are protected by law, so admire them from a distance of at least 10 feet, never touch or crowd them, and let them rest undisturbed. It is a magical sight to end or begin your drive.

Tips for Your Stop

Because Ho’okipa sits near the start of the drive, it works best as a quick morning pull-off or a golden-hour stop on your way back, when the turtles and the light are at their best. The overlook is the easy option, while the beach itself has strong currents and is not ideal for casual swimming. Bring a camera, mind the wind, and give the wildlife plenty of space.
